The 5 Foot Bookshelf

Today I’ve been busy reading the famed Harvard Classics (also known as the “5 Foot Bookshelf”) as part of a new book club in Calgary.

Compiled by the then-president of Harvard in 1909, the series was made after said president commented that anyone could get a Harvard education in ‘15 minutes of reading a day.’

The world has changed a fair amount in the 100 plus years since the collection was created, and there’s legitimate criticism of the set being “books by dead white men.” That said, I think when approached along with other books to give a more-balanced worldview, it can still be a pretty good collection to read. Given the lack of leisure reading these days, 15 minutes a day of this is probably better for the brain than reading the sports page.
